1925 Johnsburg — Snow in late May

It was unusual late May weather at Johnsburg a century ago.

“Wm. J. Ward of Barton Mines reported a four-inch fall of snow Monday morning at the mines. Several towns also reported a severe snow squall in the early morning. The storm hit No. Creek at about 5 a.m. but melted immediately,” The North Creek Enterprise reported on May 28, 1925.

“Saturday afternoon our hamlet was visited by a hailstorm, and Monday morning the higher ground was covered with snow,” the Riparius correspondent reported.

“Roscoe Robinson and lady friend of Schroon Lake attended the dance Saturday evening at Pierson’s on Loon Lake. Ros reports a good time,” The North Creek Enterprise reported on June 4. “Roscoe Robinson purchased a Chevrolet coupe at Bissell’s garage last week. Got to have more power Ros!”

• “A valuable horse owned by Dr. Lee Sommerville dropped dead at French settlement Tuesday while hauling lumber from Jenks mill. His name was King and his mate is called Queen,” the Enterprise reported on June 11.
• “Katherine Johnson was presented with a beautiful silk scarf from her pupils. Marion Waddell presented it to her and beautifully expressed the pupil’s regret that she was not to be with them next year,” the Wevertown correspondent reported in the Enterprise on June 18.
• “Wm. R. Waddell, who is building an addition to his store, has the job well under way. The building is a two-story structure, the first floor will be for office use and the second floor for a living apartment,” the Enterprise reported on June 18.
• “The local school attended the annual Field Day outing at Johnsburg Friday,” the Riparius correspondent reported in the Enterprise on June 11.
• “Rae Galusha has spent the week traveling to all our pretty neighboring villages from Chestertown to Tupper Lake,” the Enterprise reported on June 11.
• “Pat Chasson’s new Chevrolet coach has arrived,” the Sodom correspondent reported in the Enterprise on May 28.
• “Mr. and Mrs. Byron Anders are the proud owners of a new Nash touring,” the Enterprise reported on June 4.
• “Percy J. Allen has a new 6-cylinder Jewett sedan, which he purchased recently. Mr. Allen has taken the agency for the Jewett and will supply the local trade,” the Enterprise reported on June 11.
• “Harvey Soucis has purchased a new Hudson super six,” the Bakers Mills correspondent reported on June 11.
