It was a milestone event that changed the traditional banker’s hours at Whitehall.

“Saturday, the Champlain Silk Mill began paying their employees by check. How long this method of payment will continue is not known at this time,” the Whitehall correspondent reported in The Glens Falls Times on April 21, 1925. “The employees who have heretofore been paid by cash seem pleased with check system. The banks Saturday afternoon, which normally close at one o’clock, reopened at three o’clock and remained open for one hour giving the late shift workers in the mills an opportunity to cash their checks.”

In other 1925 Whitehall news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

  • “Saturday evening the first straw hat of the season as part of the male’s attire appeared on the streets,” the Whitehall correspondent reported in The Glens Falls Times on April 21. “So far as the season is concerned, the man was properly dressed, but, considering the weather, it looked considerably out of place. Then the all-day snowstorm of Sunday following in Saturday’s wake did not lend a thing to the occasion.”
  • “The Whitehall Progress Co. are to erect six two-family homes, 20 to 40 Champlain Avenue. This is the third six two-family houses the Progress Co. has erected,” the Times reported on April 24.
  • “Miss Eleanor Johnson has been appointed summer supervisor of the Schenectady playgrounds for the coming season,” the Whitehall correspondent reported in The Post-Star on April 24.
  • Ambrose Gilligan of Whitehall was a member of the Union College relay team set to compete at the Renn relay in Philadelphia, the Whitehall correspondent reported in the Times on April 25.

Gilligan had lettered in three events

  • “Raymond Kilmer has purchased a new Studebaker touring car,” the Whitehall correspondent reported in the Times on April 18.
  • “Hershall Polley has purchased a Jewitt touring car. It was bought of the Champlain Garage, Main Street,” the Whitehall correspondent reported in the Times on April 21.
  • “Ovid LaMay has purchased a Dodge truck of the Champlain Garage. Mr. LaMay will use it for trucking purposes,” the Whitehall correspondent reported in the Times on April 24. “Reginald Murphy has purchased a Ford coupe. It was bought from Arlington garage. …. Frank May has traded his Ford for a Buick.”
