W. H. Roblee was making improvements to his hotel at North River.

“The North River Hotel is one of the most popular hostelries in the Adirondacks, and a prosperous season is looked for,” the North Creek correspondent reported in The Morning Star on June 19, 1890. “By the way, Dennis Donohue, the hotel gardener, is a successful horticulturist.”

Tourists began arriving by train on June 23.

“The regular summer train between Saratoga and North Creek, on the Adirondack Road, commenced its trips on Monday in charge of Conductor Phillip Whittaker,” The Morning Star reported on June 25.

In other 19th century Johnsburg news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

  • Photographer G.D. Smith of Chestertown passed through North River on his way to Blue Mountain Lake, The Morning Star reported on Aug. 1, 1890.

“Nate Bennett has gone to some unknown pond on a fishing excursion,” the North River correspondent reported in The Morning Star on Aug 21, 1890.
