19th century Johnsburg — New patent cooler

It was state-of-the-art for the era.

“John H. Wade has just put in a new patent cooler at his meat market. It keeps the temperature at forty degrees,” the North Creek correspondent reported in The Morning Star on May 9, 1895.

In other 19th century Johnsburg news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

  • “Calvin Roblee is making improvements to his house, known as the Calvin Roblee Hotel building, and has secured the services of four carpenters, who commenced work this morning,” the North River correspondent reported in The Morning Star on April 27, 1895.
  • “A car containing nine stylish Canadian driving horses arrived (at Glens Falls) Saturday from Montreal. They are the property of William R. Waddell of North Creek, and will be taken to that place today,” The Morning Star reported on May 6, 1895.
  • “The garnet business is booming this spring on H. H. Barton’s territory on Gore Mountain,” the North Creek correspondent reported in The Morning Star on May 9, 1895.
  • “The hotel at Johnsburg Corners owned by Luke Morton has been reopened under the management of James Whipple,” The Morning Star reported on Amy 13, 1895.
  • “George Straight of North Creek yesterday purchased five road horses of Edward Barber,” The Morning Star reported on May 28, 1895.
  • “W. H. Baker has sold his store to John Langdon, while Mr. Langdon will remain in the Adirondack Hotel as landlord for T. J. Smith, who owns the property which was formerly owned by W. H. Baker,” the North Creek correspondent reported in The Morning Star on June 1, 1895.
  • “Messrs. Brayley & Noxen, our hardware dealers, are getting ready to erect a new store just south of J. H. Wade’s grocery store,” the North Creek correspondent reported in The Morning Star on June 22, 1895. “James Walden is laying the foundation. The building will be 26 x 65 feet, two stories high.”
  • “Verplanck Colvin and party have been stopping at the North River Hotel since last Thursday,” the North River correspondent reported in The Morning Star on June 29, 1895.
  • “Al Bump has leased the hotel lately vacated by Luke Morton and is moving in,” the Riparius correspondent reported in The Morning Star on June 29, 1895.
