They danced into the “wee small hours” of the morning.

“Last Wednesday night at the Stone Opera House occurred the event of the season. It was a masquerade ball given by the Social Club,” the Luzerne correspondent reported in The Morning Star of Glens Falls on March 31, 1894. “Music was furnished by Ayer’s Orchestra, assisted by Lona and B.F. Scoville. The dance was enjoyed to the wee small hours, with pleasure to all.”

In other 19th century Luzerne news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

  • A local druggist was diversifying, and a local grocer was renovating.

“Homer Marins will move his stock of drugs to the Slyter store and carry a line of furniture in connection with the business,” the Luzerne correspondent reported in The Morning Star of Glens Falls on March 24, 1894.

“Morton Brothers will soon commence extensive repairs on store and market,” the Luzerne correspondent reported in The Morning Star on Feb. 17, 1894.

  • “A wrestling match between W.S. LaDow and Jasper Jap, of Saratoga, came off at the opera house on Tuesday evening, but was not very well attended,” the Luzerne correspondent reported in The Morning Star on Nov. 27, 1893.
  • “We have three barber shops in town, so there is no trouble to get shaved while you wait,” the Luzerne correspondent reported in The Morning Star on April 21.
  • “Pathmaster Pulver is improving the sidewalks as well as the wagon roads, which is something very much needed,” the Luzerne correspondent reported in The Morning Star on April 28, 1894.
