The appearance of properties around Putnam was looking up.

“Charles McLaughlin is improving the appearance of his barn with a coat of paint. Elroy Dedrick does the work,” the Putnam correspondent reported in The Granville Sentinel on April 6, 1894.

“William Wright is erecting a fine horse barn. — R.P Graham is improving the appearance of his store and also building an addition,” the Putnam correspondent reported in The Granville Sentinel on April 20, 1894.

In other 19th century Putnam news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

  • Neighbors celebrated an octogenarian’s longevity.

“John Craig celebrated his 85th birthday last week on Wednesday. Despite the bad roads, a large number of his friends were present to wish him many happy returns,” the Putnam correspondent reported in The Granville Sentinel on March 2, 1894.

  • Wilson Meiklejohn won the first prize of a Fort Ticonderoga souvenir cup and saucer at the Putnam Thanksgiving supper, The Granville Sentinel reported on Dec. 8, 1893.

Willie Cummings won the second prize of a scarf pin.

  • “A very pleasant sugar party was given by Burt and Winnie Graham on Friday evening,” the Putnam correspondent reported in The Granville Sentinel on April 20, 1894.
  • Pork chop prices were down, but not everyone was happy.

“Our farmers are doing a good bit of grumbling about the prices offered for pork,” the Putnam correspondent reported in The Granville Sentinel on Dec. 29, 1893.

  • “A number of new members were received into the U.P (United Presbyterian) Church Sabbath,” the Putnam correspondent reported in The Granville Sentinel on Feb. 2, 1894.
  • “There will be a musicale in the U.P. Church next Tuesday evening, or should that evening prove stormy and unfavorable, it will be held the following Tuesday,” the Putnam correspondent to The Granville Sentinel reported on Feb. 16, 1894. “The entertainment will be given by the singing class under Mrs. Reynolds. A fine treat is expected.”
