Tourists bound for Schroon Lake watched for the wagon at Ticonderoga, and they all took a ride.

“Commencing June 1 and continuing through the summer season a four-horse tally-ho coach between the Burleigh House (in Ticonderoga) and Schroon Lake for the convenience and pleasure of summer visitors,” The Morning Star of Glens Falls reported on May 9, 1894

In other 19th century Schroon Lake news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

  • “Schroon Lake is to have a local telephone system. Electrician George Davison of Warrensburg is constructing the plant,” The Morning Star reported on May 14, 1894.
  • “A large forest fire is burning on the east side of the lake,” the Schroon Lake correspondent reported on May 19, 1894. “Hundreds of acres have already been burned. Fire Warden Rickerb has been fighting it for several days with a gang of men. The fire started near Gregoryville and is still going.”
  • “Fred LaSalle, L.C. Trapp, Robert McMillan and Arthur Lyle left last evening on a fishing excursion after brook trout. They will fish streams in the neighborhood of Schroon, and will return on Wednesday evening,” The Morning Star reported on May 8, 1894.
  • “The Windsor Hotel of Schroon Lake will be conducted this season by Oliver Allard, who for a number of years has been engaged in the lively business of this place,” the Schroon Lake correspondent reported in The Morning Star on May 16, 1894. “The house was opened to guests on Monday.”

C. McGinley of New York City was hired as manager.

  • “Carl Rickhardt with his family have taken rooms at the Ondawa (Hotel), where he will remain for some time. He is an expert angler, and we expect to hear of some big catches.”
