Post Weed of the Grand Army of the Republic had new hats for the Ticonderoga Memorial Day observance, the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on June 2, 1876.

There was a great display of community spirit in the parade through downtown and the ceremony of music and prayers.

“Never before was Memorial Day so universally and fittingly observed in this place. Young and old paid tribute to the memory of the brave sons of old Ticonderoga who gave up their lives on the bloody fields of battle fighting for the flag and for the Union,” the Sentinel reported. “Perfect harmony and good feeling prevailed. There was no drunkenness or disturbance any kind.”

In other news reported in the Ticonderoga Sentinel on June 2, 1876.

  • “Weed & Flemings Soda Fountain was never in better running order than in this season.”
  • “John Jalet has leased the Burleigh Sawmill for a term of five years, and is now ready to do sawing, plaining, etc. Mr. Jalet is an architect and builder and is prepared to do anything in that line.”
