19th century vocabulary — Oleaginous

  • Desideratum: something that is needed of wanted — “Prophesies are freely made that Fort Edward, Glens Falls, South Glens Falls and Sandy Hill will ultimately be combined into one municipal corporation. The fact that these villages are located in three counties may delay the desideratum.” — Troy Press, in an article republished Feb.27,1891 in The Granville Sentinel.
  • Apace: swiftly, quickly — “We cast aside all innate modesty to say that the circulation of The Star grows apace. The subscription list was increased yesterday to the extent of thirty-three copies.” — The Morning Star, Dec. 21, 1887
