50 years ago in Glens Falls— Local D.A.R. celebrated 75th anniversary
Fifty years ago the Jane McCrea Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated its 75th anniversary on Jan. 8 at Christ Church United Methodist.
Entertainment at a finger foods luncheon included a “Fashion Show of Yesteryears,” with historic gowns which the Stony Creek Historical Society loaned for the occasion, The Post-Star reported on Jan. 4, 1974.
Pianist Ruth Rolleston performed “Morning Song” and “In an Old Cathedral,” compositions of Mrs. Harvey Ingalsbee, DAR regent from 1918 to 1920.
The chapter held its organization meeting Jan. 11, 1899, at the home of Mrs. Joseph King of Fort Edward, The Post-Star reported.
The constitution was approved on Feb. 22.
Charter members King and Mrs. Preston Davis attended the 25th anniversary celebration at the Gift and Tea Shop at the Glens Falls Insurance Co. building.
The 50th anniversary celebration was held at The Queensbury Hotel.
The chapter’s first major project was in 1901, when a monument of Kingsbury Blue Stone was dedicated to Jane McCrea.
On Sept. 16, 1914, the chapter placed a boulder to mark the location of Fort Lyman.

- Kaleidoscope, a multi-generation theater group, was set to premier the new drama “2002 — A Space Idiosy” at the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council Winter Arts Concert at Glens Falls High School, The Post-Star reported on Jan. 15.
The play was a parody of the “Three Little Pigs” fairy tale.
“The presentation is set in space on a faraway planet. The characters are three little Martians and a big, bad Putonian.”
Also at the concert program, the Glens Falls Ballet Center premiered the new ballet “La Favorite.”
The cast was comprised of 16 intermediate and advanced dancers.
- On Jan. 5, tickets were selling quickly for the Glens Falls Permanent Firemen’s dinner dance to honor newly retired Chief LeRoy Akins, who worked in the department for 35 years, on Jan. 12 at The Queensbury Hotel.
- The five press men had a combined 220 years of solidarity.
International Typographical Union, Local 06, presented Albert Prevost and Emile Deguire with 50-year pins at a meeting at the Glens Falls Labor Temple, The Post-Star reported on Jan. 8.
John Shine, Edward Shea, Alzor Hammel received 40-year pins.
- On Jan 14, The Glens Falls Operetta Club performed the play “A Candle on the Table” at the Jackson Heights School PTA annual dinner.
- On Jan. 15, Richard Bartlett of Glens Falls was appointed a state administrative judge.
