This is the latest in a series of posts about news reported a century ago in the Ticonderoga Sentinel.

Ticonderoga High School had a record graduating class of 20 at its commencement on June 21, 1920 at the Ticonderoga Playhouse.

Lillian Drake Pfau was valedictorian and Gertrude Rathbun Loomis salutatorian.

H.F. Martin, head of the Silver Bay School, was commencement speaker.

“Delivered in a forceful manner, full to the brim with good advice and interesting throughout, it could not be anything but inspirational in its effect,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on June 24, 1920.

White’s Orchestra of Whitehall performed music for commencement and for a dance after the ceremony.

Crown Point High School had six graduates, Port Henry five, and Mineville 10.

In other June 24, 1920 Ticonderoga Sentinel news:

The Street Road correspondent reported on agriculture.

“The rain last week came just in time to save the strawberry crop. Those who have garden berries are having no trouble to dispose of them for 40 cents per quart, and large quantities of wild ones are being picked every day on the flats.”

Nuisance insects threatened other crops.

“Rose bugs are here in abundance again. Between them and the crows and onion maggots the farmers are having a fight for their money.”

Roy Lockwood left June 21 to travel to San Francisco, where he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

“He probably will be gone about three weeks and on his return trip expects to make short visits in Dakota towns in which he once lived.”

Arthur French and his staff were preparing for 50 campers to arrive at Camp Ticonderoga for boys at Cook’s Bay.

Alfred Lamb of Hague bought a team of horses from Francis Waters.

Janet Tobin received delivery of a large truck load of supplies for her store at Graphite.
