Century-old Ti — Back to school

This is the latest in a series of posts about news reported a century ago in the Ticonderoga Sentinel.

A century ago, dramatic and comedic skills were among the necessary qualifications for school board members.

Or, perhaps those duties were delegated to spouses.

Ticonderoga Central school board members and their spouses on Sep. 7,1921 held a reception at the school gymnasium for new teachers and about 50 invited guests.

“Stunts, speeches and skits were the special features of the evening, while at 11 o’clock light refreshments were served,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on Sept. 15. “All the teachers agree that the members of the Board of Education and their wives were royal hosts.”

On Sept. 9, the Senior Class held a Friday evening dance.

“It was a very pleasant party and everyone was so well pleased that they hope other such dances will soon be given.”

School orchestra members performed music for dancing.

The Senior Class realized about $8 in profit — the equivalent of about $125 in 2021 dollars.

School classes and groups were organizing for the new school year.

Frederick Weed was elected president of the Senior Class, Stuart Moore of the Junior Class, Naomi Hunt of the Sophomore Class, Clarence Mero of the Freshman Class.

Anita Bates was elected president of the Betta Kappa Society.

In other Sept. 15, 1921 Ticonderoga Sentinel news:

• The Arcady Country Club and associated camps at Hague raised $250 — the equivalent of $3,908 in 2021 dollars — for Moses-Ludington Hospital.
• James Wolfe of Wilmington won a 3-way primary for the Republican nomination for Essex County Sheriff. carrying 12 of 18 towns, but not Ticonderoga.

George Eastman of Westport, the second-place finisher, carried Ticonderoga.
