This is the latest in a series of posts about news reported a century ago in the Ticonderoga Sentinel.

Earl Wilkinson, a local World War I soldier who died in France in 2018, was buried Nov. 7, 1920 with full military honors at Mount Hope Cemetery.

“Ticonderoga on Sunday afternoon paid full and solemn tribute to another of her gallant sons who fell in the fields of France,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on Nov. 11, 1920.

Wilkinson, who served in the Whitehall National Guard unit with the 105th Infantry, was wounded July 14, 1918, and died on either Aug. 24 or 25, 1918.

The Ticonderoga American Legion post was in charge of funeral activities, which began with a 2:30 p.m. prayer service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leman Wilkinson, parents of the deceased.

The Ticonderoga Community Band and more than 30 veterans were in the line of march escorting Wilkinson’s body to First Baptist Church, where the main funeral was held prior to burial.

“A young man of excellent habits, industrious and altogether likable, he held a high place in the esteem of all who knew him and his name, and the sacrifice he made will forever linger in the minds of his friends and a community that will honor him.”
