Daniel J. Hogan, a former commander of National Guard Company K of Glens Falls, was a military adviser to Gov. Charles Evans Hughes.

Hughes, a Glens Falls native, appointed Hogan aide de camp on Dec. 19, 1908.

Hogan had recently been elected Company K captain in October 1908.

The Third Brigade examining board approved his promotion to captain after Hogan “passed a very credible examination.”

“The many friends of this able and gentlemanly soldier will be pleased to learn of his success,” The Post-Star reported at the time. “The company is to be congratulated on having secured so competent a commander.”

Hogan remained in the aide de camp post under Gov. Horace White, who filled the remainder of the gubernatorial term after Hughes took office as U.S. Supreme Court associate justice in October 1910.

Hogan, who rose to the rank of major, was in the National Guard for 27 years.

He was deployed with Company K during the Spanish American War.

Hogan also distinguished himself as a representative of the New York State Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“It was his work in this capacity that best serves to portray the nature of the man, displaying that tender feeling of love which deplored unkindness in any form,” The Post-Star editorialized at the time of Hogan’s death.

Hogan attended Elmwood Seminary in Glens Falls and went on to graduate Troy Business College in 1887.

He was a plumbing contractor who owned the former telephone exchange building on Exchange Street.

He was a member of Glens Falls Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Glens Falls Knights of Columbus.

Hogan died at Glens Falls Hospital on March 4, 1920, at age 48, after undergoing surgery for stomach trouble.
