Downtown 1889 — Get me to the store on time
The headline promised “Another Great Surprise.”
“For the boys,” The Morning Star reported on June 26, 1889. “Between ten and eleven o’clock this morning, The Rochester Clothing Co. gives all the boys that call on time a present. Get there boys.”
In July, The Rocester Clothing Co. attracted attention when the retailer exhibited “Romeo and Juliet,” a pair of live foxes, in its display window.
H. Thomas & Son relocted their store to Glen Street and nicknamed it “The Checkered Store” because of its distincitve facade, The Morning Star reported on July 11.
“It is painted in white and dark black, in imitation of white marble and freestone. The effect is quite novel.”
Elsewwhere in downtown, exterior renovation under way at J.N. Curvo’s market on Glen Street brought a “much improved” appearance, The Morning Star reported on June 26.
“The new wainscoating will be stained a cherry color, the walls above the wainstcoat will be covered with handsome paper paneland ceilingpainted blue.”
The Morning Star, on June 12, praised the window display at G,F, Bayle & Co’s Boston Store on Glen Street with a bit of humor that might not be politically correct in contemporary society.
“The elegant display of millinery in G.F. Bayle &Co.’s store will doubtless attract attentionn from many passers-by, and then will come a draft on the ducats in the coffers of their husbands.”
Add this to the list of one-of-a-kind items that would be wonderful to come across in an antiques store.
The touring comedy “Struck Gas” that played at the Glens Falls Opera House had great reviews.
One of the actors was also a skilled artist.
“J.C. Kline, a member of the ‘Struck Gas’ company, which was located at the Rockwell House (hotel) yesterday, placed upon one of the pages of the register a handsome pen and ink sketch, done in red and black, which evinces his skill in ornamental penmanship,” The Morning Star reported on July 12,1889.
Music filled the air in downtown Glens Falls the evening of July 12.
“The excellent concert given by the St, Mary’s Cornet Band on theAmerican House piaza (at the corner of Glen and South streets) … was enjoyed by throngs of people,” The Morning Star reported.
On July 13, The Morning Star reported that Ella Jones opened an ice cream parlot at 118 Bay St.
