Downtown July 1894 — ‘Governor and groceries’
“Governor and groceries comprise the alliterative” theme of J.R. Kelly’s display ad, and C.R. Eddy was advertising special deals available after the parade, The Morning Star of Glens Falls reported on July 18, 1894.
The downtown retailers were piggybacking on the visit of Gov. Roswell Flower and some of his chief advisors to Glens Falls that day.
The visit coincided with the bidding process for construction of a new armory on Warren Street, making the Democratic governor unusually popular in a Republican village.
St. Mary’s Band and the Juvenile Cornet Band marched in the afternoon parade to welcome Flower to Glens Falls, which preceded a reception.
A contingent of bicyclists escorted the governor and his party from Miller Hill at Queensbury to downtown Glens Falls.
