Orchids weren’t the only attraction at Dr. George Little’s greenhouses on Ridge Street in downtown Glens Falls.

“One of the most interesting sights in the larger green house is a collection of fan-tailed fish (goldfish) from Japan,” The Morning Star of Glens Falls reported on May 6, 1890. “They are very rare, none like them in this country until two months ago, when several fine specimens were imported.”

Dr. Little was having two more greenhouses built.

“These will be used chiefly for orchids, in which branch of floriculture Hugh Seales, the doctor’s florist, is very expert and has had unusual success in growing these plants at the doctor’s,” the Morning Star reported. “A number of new varieties of orchids from Mexico will next receive the attention of Mr. Seales.”
