Early RV passes through Glens Falls in 1921

The “house on wheels deluxe” attracted attention as it passed through Glens Falls on Oct. 27, 1921 on its way to Lake George.

Willard D. Rockefeller, superintendent of Albany Hospital, designed the early makeshift recreational vehicle, built on the chassis of an Army rolling kitchen, The Post-Star reported the next day.

The 12-foot long, six-feet-two-inches wide trailer was pulled behind a car.

The car and trailer could be navigated safely at speeds of up to 17 miles per hour.

The RV offered “all the comforts of home,” including a kitchenette, three-quarters size bed, sewing machine, phonograph and medicine closet — with one exception.

“We have everything but a telephone — and that we don’t want,” Rockefeller said.

Rockefeller and his wife were on their way to camp for a week at Lake George Battlefield Park.
