Glens Falls in 1920 — Russian princess born in the White House
She was a Russian princess, by marriage, who was born in the White House.
Historian and author Princess Cantacuzerne, the grand daughter of Ulysses S. Grant, spoke Jan. 28, 1920 at Christ Church Methodist in Glens Falls about conditions in Russia after the Bolshevik revolution.
“She will speak on behalf of the destitute and starving people of the land of Bolshevism and her address is expected to be full of interest,” The Post-Star reported on Jan. 20, 1920.
The princess was the wife of Major General Prince Michael Cantacuzerne who was in the United States heading a military commission that coordinated Russian relief efforts with The American Red Cross.
The couple later settled in Florida.
Julia Dent Grant Cantacuzerne Speransky was the eldest child of Frederick Dent Grant, son of Ulysses.
She wrote three books of history about the Russian Revolution, published in 1919, 1920 and 1922.
