Flags at Glens Falls City Hall and the Glens Falls Insurance Company building were at half-staff on April 27, 1921 to grieve the death the previous day of Lawrence Street lumber dealer William Andrew Brown, president of Kendrick and Brown.

A meeting of the Adirondack division of the New York Retail Dealer’s Association, scheduled in Glens Falls for the next day, was postponed because of the death of Brown, the trade group’s president.

Brown died at age 53 after several months of illness.

He had been active in Glens Falls business and civic affairs since he graduated Williams College in 1890 and went into business with Samuel D. Kendrick, who had died previously.

“During the many years he resided in the city he acquired a wide circle of friends and his disposition was such that he held a warm place in the hearts of the hundreds who were either closely associated with him or knew him only in a friendly way,” The Post-Star reported on April 27, 1921. “His business career had given him a wide range of experience and his advice was frequently sought on various matters by all classes of people who were attracted by his friendly and frank manner.”

Brown was a commissioner on the city Water Board, a director of Glens Falls Insurance Co., a director of Glens Falls YMCA, and a trustee of First Presbyterian Church.

At Williams College he played second base on the baseball team.
