Lumber baron and philanthropist Henry Crandall included a clause in his will that alcoholic beverages should not be served at the library and park that bear his name.

So, it’s not surprising that he would aid the Women’s Christian Temperance Union to operate a refreshment parlor at the Glens Falls “Glorious Fourth” celebration on Independence Day 1890.

“Through the kindness of Henry Crandall, who has offered them the free use of his store on Bay Street, they have been provided with very pleasant quarters in which to carry on their part of the celebration,” The Morning Star of Glens Falls reported on June 30, 1890.

“We understand the ladies do not contemplate entering into hose races, nor will they burn much powder on that day, but, figuratively speaking, they will pack that store from floor to ceiling with jumbo sandwiches, delicious ice cream and cakes, immense cups of lovely coffee, large cans of ice cold milk and lemonade, old-fashioned pork and beans, fruits, flowers, etc, etc, and for a trifling sum give to every man, woman or child who attends the celebration of Glens Falls, a key to the back door.”
