History threads — Batter Up shirt maker

This is the latest in an occasional series of posts about the history of the garment industry in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex counties.

Female employees of the Davis & Co. shirt factory in Fort Edward chipped in to buy a “regulation ball” for the Starch Sluggers, the factory’s male baseball team, which was set to play The Smoke Builders, of the Collman & McMurray cigar factory, on June 7, 1884.

The Smoke Builders won 29 to 13, but the Starch Sluggers, no doubt, had cleaner shirts.
