History threads — Birthday party at McMullen and Leavens

--

This is the latest in an occasional series of posts about the history of the garment industry in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex counties.

About 40 co-workers and friends “tendered a pleasant surprise” birthday party for Mrs. George Evans at the McMullen and Leavens garment factory recreation rooms, The Post-Star reported on Aug. 24, 1922.

“A sumptuous repast was partaken of and dancing was enjoyed.”

Pianist Alice Stackhouse accompanied vocal soloists Emma Bradley, Gladys Pinkerton and Elizabeth Reardon.

Beatrice Evans performed ukulele music.

Those attending presented Evans with a gift of a silver chest.

The long-time garment factory building at the corner of Lawrence and Cooper streets in Glens Falls is now The Shirt Factory arts and healing center.
