Hudson Falls in 1946 — Feeding a multitude
It was one-fifth the size of the crowd that Jesus fed with five loaves and two fishes, as told in the New Testament parable.
Yet it was still a miraculous undertaking, even if the women of the Hudson Falls Baptist Church did start with an ample supply of bread and sandwich fixings.
Sandy Hill Iron and Brass Works arranged for the church women to pack 1,000 box lunches for employees, family and friends that attended the company’s second annual family field days and picnic at Summit Lake on July 20, 1946.
Among the “friends” attending was a bus load of veterans from the Veterans Rest Camp at Mount McGregor.
A team of veterans defeated a team of Sandy Hill employees 9–3 in softball.
“Bill LaRose, a former Sandy Hill employee and former softball coach, made the trip from Albany to act as umpire for the game,” The Post-Star reported.
Frank Yarter and Laurence MacDonald won the horseshoe tournament.
The Second Regimental Band, a National Guard unit from Glens Falls, performed several times throughout the day.
Other activities included swimming, row boat rides, and foot races and relays for children.
