Port Henry Methodists dedicate new building in 1874
Nineteenth century Port Henry Methodists contributed $2,500 — the equivalent of $56,354 in 2020 dollars — in one day to liquidate debt for the church’s new lecture hall.
The contributions came in offerings at morning and evening “appropriate services” on Feb. 4, 1874 to dedicate the new building.
The Rev. Joseph E. King, pastor of Fort Edward Literary Institute, preached at the morning service.
“It was an able, powerful and eloquent discourse on church edifices, their appropriate uses and their consecration,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on Feb. 7, 1874.
The Rev. T.A. Griffin, presiding elder of the Plattsburgh District of Troy Conference, preached at the evening service.
