Metropolitan New York City newspapers benefited from a seasonal jump in single-copy sales in the Lake George area as summer residents kept track fn news and society events in the Big Apple.

Hence, many of the metropolitan papers had correspondents at Lake George.

It was in a New York City metropolitan newspaper that the bowling team at the Sagamore Hotel in Bolton Land placed a challenge to guests at the Crosbyside Hotel, a few miles away on the Lake George southeastern shore.

“That this will be a very interesting contest may be taken for granted, as all the players are experts,” The Morning Star of Glens Falls reported July 25, 1889, after the challenge was accepted.

The match at The Sagamore Hotel bolwing alley drew many spectators.

“In the afternoon a large party from Crosbyside visited the Sagamore to witness the contest,” The Morning Star reported on July 27. “A great deal of interest was manifested in the affair by the guests of the house as well. and the bowling alley was crowded.”

The Samamore team was comprised of H. O’Dell Jr., W. Tomes, F.S. Carter, and W.W. Brown.

“The Sagamore team was in fine form, having been practicing every day, while two, at least, of the other team had not played in some time.”

The Crosbyside team was comprised of hotel gusts E.L.Seelye and Theodore Wentz, along with George S. Parks and Mel Smith of Glens Falls.

At the end of four games, the score was 3,653 for The Sagamore and 3,318 for Crosbyside.

Carter, of The Sagamore, had the high score of 990, an average of 198.

“The Crosbyside bowlers are not cast down because victory was not theirs, but they hope to play another match game with The Sagamores.”
