Silver Bay in 1897 — Rattle snakes and ownership change
John Star killed four rattle snakes on one day in early July at Silver Bay on Lake George.
“This is evidently a good season for rattlers in that section,” The Morning Star of Glens Falls reported on July 13, 1897.
Silver Bay House had about 20 guests, as of July 16, and more were expected to arrive soon.
The season ended quietly.
“The Silver Bay Sunday School closed Sunday. Miss Johnson, the teacher, will return to her home in New York on Wednesday,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on Sept. 9, 1897.
Behind the scenes a major development was in store.
The Sentinel reported on Sept. 23 that Silas Paine purchased the Silver Bay hotel and all the property connected with it from J.J. Wilson.
The purchase set in motion a sequence of events over several years that would lead to establishing Silver Bay Association.
