The QBY — Arts as an incentive

Local talent was an incentive that helped attract a banking convention to The Queensbury Hotel.

“‘Safe Deposit Music Box,’ a program of local talent … provided relaxation and entertainment last night for 200 delegates and their wives attending the New York State Deposit Association convention being conducted in The Queensbury,” The Post-Star reported on May 13, 1950.

Maurice Whitney directed the Glens Falls A Capella Choir in renditions of “Russian Picnic,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and a Negro spiritual.

Artist/illustrator Douglass Crockwell showed and discussed several of his experimental abstract animated films.

The Panto-Ramics, music and comedy duo, The Ray La Farr trio, and tap dancer Patricia Collins, performed.

George Clossey, assistant personnel manager at Marinette Paper Co., was master of ceremonies.

Glens Falls Mayor Milton Tibbets welcomed the convention to the city.

“We are proud of our city. We want you to have a good time. Learn much from your rubbing elbows with one another and go home with the feeling that this has been a meeting where time and money is well spent.”
