The rain that fell on Essex County in June 1879 was very welcome.

“We had a glorious rain last Sunday night. The air has been so dense and hit with smoke and dust that to obtain a fresh breath has been almost impossible. Vegetation was fast growing into decline, but Monday morning everything donned a new look, and the sight was cheering,” the Ironville correspondent reported in the Ticonderoga Sentinel on June 6.

“The rain yesterday was heartily welcomed by men and the natural world, for vegetation was suffering extraordinary,” the Jay correspondent reported.

But then it turned cold.

“Frost last Sunday morning, New potatoes will soon be in order,” the Ticonderoga Sentinel reported on June 13.

“We’ve had heavy frosts on the 7th and 8th. Scarcely any rain. Crops backward,” the Schroon Lake correspondent reported.

The weather improved.

“We are having splendid weather. Foot races are a common occurrence at the Corners now,” the Moriah Center correspondent reported in the Ticonderoga Sentinel on June 13.

In other June weather news collected from historic newspapers of the region:

1880

“The most of our farmers have got through hoeing and some of them have already begun to make lively preparations for haying,” the Dunham’s Basin correspondent reported in The Commercial Advertiser of Sandy Hill on June 23, 1880.

Haying had begun at Sandy Hill, but not around the region in general, The Commercial Advertiser reported.

“The crop will be short compared with last year’s. Potatoes are looking well, as is also corn. Oats are doing well at present and the promise is good for a fair crop, notwithstanding the protracted dry spell.”

Rain did come.

“No doubt farmers in this section go about with light hearts and happy faces after such a fine rain as we had last night,” The Commercial Advertiser reported on June 30.
