Win one for “Putt”
An era was coming to close.
“After 20 years as head football coach at Glens Falls High School, Bernard ‘Putt’ LeMay will lead his Indians into battle for the last time today,” The Post-Star reported on Nov. 11, 1972.
Foothills Council champion Glens Falls, with a 3–1 record in conference and a 6–2 overall record, was closing its season on the road against Shaker.
“This clash should prove interesting for obvious reasons as Glens Falls is the top team in this area and Shaker, a Suburban Council power, will test the strength of the Indians against the rugged ball played in the Capital District.”
Playing in the rain and mud at Newtonville, Glens Falls made it one for “Putt,” winning 21–0, The Post-Star reported on Nov 13.
“The Indians roared into Shaker, held the Blue Bisons to a total of three first downs — one of which was on a penalty — and completely dominated the action.”
Glens Falls had 14 first downs.
Willie Steans, Bob Westcott and Art Cronin scored touchdowns.
It was the ninth touchdown of the season for Steans.
Kicker Steve Lunlaug made all three extra points, bringing his total score for the season to 35 points.
“Tom Philion, Doug Beaty, Jim Duggan, Jim Town, and Mike Vittengl were outstanding for the Indians on defense.”
It brought LeMay to a record of 111 wins, 25 losses and five ties.
LeMay had coached Glens Falls to six undefeated seasons, nine Northern Conference championships and one Foothills Council championship.
