WWSC countdown to 75 — From Empire Theatre live to the nation

This is the latest in an occasional series of posts leading up to the 75th anniversary of Glens Falls radio station WWSC on Dec. 18, 2021.

Empire Theatre on South Street in Glens Falls was a stop on the circuit for national touring musical acts that broadcast shows over the Mutual Radio Network.

When they came to town, WWSC 1450, the local affiliate, broadcast the shows from coast to coast.

Bluegrass duo Jerry and Sky performed three shows at 2:30, 8 and 10 p.m. March 11, 1949.

WWSC broadcast the 2:30 p.m. show.

On April 23, 1949 at 7:30 p.m. , WWSC broadcast the “Saturday Night Jamboree” with Jimmie Miller and his Saddlemates live from the Empire Theatre.

Prominent politicians also took to the air on WWSC.

On Sept. 23, 1949, WWSC broadcast Gov Thomas Dewey participating in a ground breaking ceremony for the Million Dollar Beach in Lake George.

On Sept. 29, 1949, WWSC broadcast a campaign speech that U.S. Sen. John Foster Dulles gave at the Queensbury Hotel, a recorded to broadcast that evening a roundtable discussion of issues with Dulles and local business leaders.
