WWSC countdown to 75 — ‘Fun to Live in America’

This is the latest in an occasional series of posts leading up to the 75th anniversary of Glens Falls radio station WWSC on Dec. 18, 2021.

Kiwanis Clubs of Glens Falls, Hudson Falls and Warrensburg collaborated with WWSC in 1951 to promote entrepreneurship with broadcast of the Kiwanis International series “It’s Fun To Live in America,”

The series of 15-minute dramatized biographies of famous entrepreneurs was broadcast on 450 radio stations nation wide.

The first in the series, from 8:45 to 9 p.m. March 20, dramatized the life of David Sarnoff, a Russian immigrant who was president and later chairman of Radio Corporation of America.

Future programs were to dramatize the lives of J.C. Penny and Milton Eisenhower.

Local Kiwanis clubs purchased recordings of the programs, and WWSC donated air time.

In other 1951 radio history, on June 7, 1951 WWSC broadcast “a profound talk” that international relations expert Clark M. Eichelberger presented at Crandall Library.

Eichelberger was director of the American Association for the United Nations Commission to Study the Organization of Peace.

“Mr. Eichelberger’s remarks, which were broadcast over Radio Station WWSC, stressed the importance of the United Nations in the continuous struggle to obtain world peace and emphasized the great part which public opinion has in the matter,” The Post-Star reported.

In March 1951 WWSC interviewed Betty Fisher and Barbara McClure who were selected as Glens Falls Young Adult Civic League 1951 envoys to foreign countries.
