This is the latest in an occasional series of posts leading up to the 75th anniversary of Glens Falls radio station WWSC on Dec. 18, 2021.

Chief Announcer James Sowden was the first voice that listeners heard when WWSC radio first went on the air at 6 a.m. Dec. 18, 1946.

He was a Westchester County native who graduated from Cornell University, where he was an announcer and producer on the college radio station, with a degree in engineering.

While working at WWSC, he also took part in “The F.B.I. in Action” radio program on WGY in Schenectady.

Later Sowden worked in the engineering and marketing departments at General Electric Co.

He stayed active in public speaking as vice president of the Toastmasters Club of Glens Falls and in performances with the Glens Falls Operetta Club and Glens Falls Little Theater Group.

Sowden was a captain in National Guard Company K of Glens Falls.
